Understanding Engines

Engines have become an extremely complex and difficult body to understand, which is why it is very important that they are checked regularly by someone who knows what they are doing. The basic maintenance checks, such as oil and water can be checked by anyone and should be done so at least once a week and before any long journeys. But the more in depth elements of the engine should only be touched by a competent person. Chanes are that with the excellence of modern engines, if there is a problem it will be something very simple, but should still be checked by a professional.

Problems that can be had with Engines

A Car EngineAn example of a common problem would be when you use the accelerator and it seems as though there is less power than there should be it could simply be that the spark plugs need changing, or the air filter needs a very good clean. These can be done by anyone as long as they take the proper steps, although there are some new engines that will not allow any casing to be removed unless in a garage.

Here are some instructions on how to fix the more common problems associated with your engine:

  • The air filter is fairly simple to check and change if you can get to it in your engine. It is simply a matter of removing the couple of screws holiding it in place and then shining a torch from the inside out. If you are unable to see the light shining from the other side then the chances are that the filter is blocked and needs changing.
  • Before starting any maintenance on your car you will need to ensure you have the correct tools for the job, including a Phillips Screwdriver, straight-edge screwdriver, a new air filter (in this case) and breather filter, and a pair of pliers. Usually having the car manual to hand is also helpful as it often contains more detailed instructions on the simple maintenance.
    • If you have am older car than the last couple of years then it is very likely that the filter housing is on top of the engine in a round holder that can simply be unscrewed (via the wingnuts) for removal. Sometimes you will find extra clips too that must be unfastened to get the filter out.
    • With newer models of car it is more likely that the air filter will be housed in a rectagular-shaped container that is usually placed somewhere near the radiator. Once you have discovered this, simply remove the clips holding it in place and take the filter out.
  • When this is done your next step will be to fit the new filter. Hopefully you will have checked that you have the correct one both in size and model as there are various different types on the market. You can check this with a garage, your manual, or in many hardware stores you can find listings of the parts suitable for your car. Place it in the house and replace the nuts and screws ensuring not to overtighten.
